HISTORY OF OUR LOGO

In the heart of the Caribbean, where legends walk through the mist and nighttime whispers still send shivers down the spine, there was no better symbol to represent the Puerto Rico Horrific Expo than the Chupacabra. We chose this creature not only for its chilling appearance and impact on popular culture, but because its story was born right here, on our island.

The Chupacabra is more than a myth—it's a Puerto Rican horror icon, a figure that blends the unknown, the supernatural, and what is deeply ours. Its presence in the event’s logo pays tribute to the dark legacy that lives in the soul of Puerto Rico, clawing its mark into the very spirit of what this festival represents.

👹 The Chupacabras: The Creature Born in Puerto Rico

In modern horror history, few creatures have stirred as much controversy as the Chupacabra—a legendary being whose dark tale was born in Puerto Rico in 1995 and has since spread fear throughout the Americas.

📍 The Origin of the Myth

It all began in the town of Canóvanas, on the eastern side of the island, when dozens of farmers started reporting the mysterious deaths of their animals. The victims were primarily goats, chickens, and rabbits—found dead, completely drained of blood, with two or three precise puncture wounds on their necks and no signs of struggle.

Local media quickly picked up the story, and the name that emerged to describe the culprit was: El Chupacabras —literally, “the goat sucker.”

🧟 The First Description

One of the most frequently cited witnesses was Madelyne Tolentino, who described the creature as being about three to four feet tall, with a reptilian appearance, large red eyes, spinal spikes running down its back, and strange movements—almost as if it were floating or leaping in long bounds. According to some researchers, her description closely resembled science fiction and horror film creatures, which only fueled fear and skepticism.

🌎 The Myth Spreads

After the initial reports in Puerto Rico, similar stories began to surface in the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Chile, Brazil, and parts of the United States, such as Texas and Florida. However, the details varied: some claimed the Chupacabras looked like a hairless dog with glowing eyes, while others insisted it had an extraterrestrial or demonic nature. But everyone agreed on one thing—it left its victims wholly drained of blood.

🧬 Science, Myth, and Culture

Over time, scientists and skeptics have tried to explain the phenomenon with more rational causes—ranging from animal diseases and mangy coyotes to mass hysteria. But for many Puerto Ricans, the Chupacabra is more than just a myth; it’s part of modern folklore—a dark figure born from rural fear, the unknown, and the enduring power of urban legends.

🔥 A Puerto Rican Horror Icon

The Chupacabra has become a cultural icon, inspiring films, comics, video games, and documentaries. But beyond entertainment, it still represents that hidden side of the Caribbean—where heat, countryside fog, and the whispering of trees conceal things that defy explanation.

Within the Puerto Rico Horrific Expo context, the Chupacabra is more than a terrifying creature—it's a symbol of horror born here, on our soil. A being that embodies the unexplainable, the folkloric, and the profoundly terrifying.

That’s why we proudly chose our Chupacabra's mythical figure as our logo's official mascot.
